Now on the RIVE I have seen some odd behavior, I could've sworn I left it on "XMP," but on a subsequent POST I noticed the "Ai Overclock tuner" on "auto." So I wonder if it switches to "auto" on one of these subsequent POSTs, but BIOS ver may have something to do with this too - I have only used 1404 and older. However, if you use "Ai Overclock tuner" "manual," this will be minimized or not happen at all. The RIVE does memory "training" on occasional subsequent POSTs, you can see this evident by an occasional POST that takes longer than usual. The table is *supposed* to be programmed correctly by the Mfgr, but occasionally (rare) one isn't. When you choose XMP profile #1 that table will be read on one of the modules by the BIOS and the BIOS then sets the values accordingly. More: Memory Mfgr's program a SPD info memory table in each of their memory modules, the info can be read by mobos and used to set BIOS settings, the most extreme (overclocked by Intel standards) are called the XMP tables. XMP stands for eXtreme Memory Profile and it's a way to configure your bios with the required info to run your memory at top performance.
